Air Conditioning Installation

British summers aren’t what they used to be. More and more homes across Bournemouth, Poole and Dorset are fitting air conditioning to stay comfortable through the hotter months, and to take the edge off in winter too.
Boiler Geeks are fully certified to install air conditioning, so the same team you already trust with your boiler and heating can handle your cooling as well. We install wall-mounted and ceiling-mounted split and multi-split systems in homes of all shapes and sizes, from a single bedroom unit through to a whole-house setup.
Every installation starts with a free, no obligation home survey. We’ll look at the rooms you want cooled, talk through where the indoor and outdoor units can go, and recommend a system that’s the right size for the space.

Fully certified installers

Air conditioning isn’t a job for just anybody. Systems contain refrigerant gases that are covered by F-Gas regulations, and by law they must only be handled by qualified, certified engineers.
Boiler Geeks hold all the correct certifications to install, commission and maintain air conditioning systems. That means the job is done legally, safely, and to manufacturer standard, which also keeps your warranty intact.

What is a split system air conditioner?

A split system is the most common type of home air conditioning. It comes in two parts: a quiet indoor unit mounted on the wall of the room you want to cool, and a compressor unit sited outside the property. The two are connected by a small run of pipework.
A single split system cools one room. A multi-split system runs several indoor units from one outdoor compressor, so you can cool a number of rooms without cluttering the outside of your house with multiple units.

Cooling in summer, heating in winter

Most modern air conditioning units aren’t just for cooling. They work as air-to-air heat pumps, which means they can warm a room as well as cool it, and they do it far more efficiently than an electric heater.
For a lot of homeowners that’s the deciding factor. A room that’s unbearable in July and freezing in January can be sorted out with one unit, and it’ll take some of the load off your central heating through the shoulder months.

More than just cooler air

A good system does a few things at once:

  • Cleaner air. Built-in filtration pulls dust, pollen and airborne particles out of the room as it runs. Worth knowing if anyone in the house suffers with hay fever or asthma.
  • Dehumidifying. Most units have a dry mode that pulls moisture out of the air. Useful in muggy weather and in rooms prone to condensation.
  • Quiet operation. Modern indoor units run at a level you’d struggle to notice, which is why they suit bedrooms and home offices.
  • Room-by-room control. Set each room to the temperature the people in it actually want.

Where can air conditioning be installed?

Almost anywhere in the home. The rooms we’re asked about most often are:

  • Bedrooms, for sleeping through hot nights
  • Loft conversions and rooms in the roof, which trap heat badly
  • Home offices and garden rooms
  • Conservatories and extensions with a lot of glass
  • Open-plan kitchen diners
  • South-facing living rooms
  • Flats and apartments, where opening a window isn’t always an option

If you’re not sure whether a room is suitable, give us a call. We’ll tell you straight.

Replacing an existing system

Not every job is a fresh install. If you’ve already got air conditioning that’s tired, inefficient or beyond economical repair, we can replace it.
Older systems often run on refrigerants that have since been phased out, which makes repairs difficult and expensive. In a lot of cases a straight swap for a modern unit costs less over a few years than keeping the old one limping along, and the efficiency gain is significant.

What’s included in an installation

Every job we quote covers:

  • Supply of a modern, energy-efficient unit sized correctly for your rooms
  • Installation by fully qualified, certified engineers
  • All standard pipework, brackets and condensate drainage
  • Electrical connection and full system commissioning
  • Testing to confirm the system is performing as it should
  • A proper walkthrough of the controls before we leave

Anything non-standard, such as long pipe runs, difficult access or scaffolding, gets flagged at survey stage and included in your quote. No surprises once we’re on site.

Where does the outdoor unit go?

This is the part people underestimate. The outdoor unit needs airflow around it, sensible access for servicing, and a position that won’t annoy you or your neighbours when it’s running on a warm evening.
Usually that’s a side or rear wall, a flat roof, or ground level on brackets or a plinth. We’ll work out the best spot during the survey and talk you through the options rather than just putting it wherever is quickest.

Do I need planning permission?

For most homes, no. Air conditioning units normally fall under permitted development, provided the outdoor unit is sited sensibly and isn’t too close to a boundary.
There are exceptions. Listed buildings, conservation areas and some flats have tighter rules. We’ll flag anything that looks like it might be a problem during your survey rather than leaving you to find out later.

How long does an installation take?

A single room split system is usually a one day job. Multi-room systems typically take two to three days depending on the number of units and the pipework runs involved.
We’ll give you a clear timescale before we start, and we tidy up after ourselves.

Servicing your air conditioning

Like a boiler, an air conditioning system runs better and lasts longer if it’s looked after. An annual service keeps the filters clean, checks refrigerant levels and picks up small faults before they become expensive ones. Most manufacturers also require an annual service to keep the warranty valid.
Boiler Geeks can service and maintain your system once it’s installed, so you’ve got one number to call for the whole thing.
